ADIPIC ACID - ADİPİK ASİT Details

What Is Adipic Acid?

Adipic Acid is a six-carbon aliphatic dicarboxylic acid (C₆H₁₀O₄) widely used as a key raw material in the polymer, plastic, textile, coating, and chemical industries.

Its largest and most important use is in the production of Nylon 6,6. It is also used in polyurethanes, plasticizers, resins, coatings, and food additives.

🔧 What Is Adipic Acid Used For?

1. Primary Raw Material for Nylon 6,6 (Most Important Use)

Adipic acid reacts with hexamethylene diamine to produce Nylon 6,6, a polymer known for:

  • High mechanical strength
  • Excellent abrasion resistance
  • Good heat resistance

This makes it essential for high-performance engineering plastics.

2. Polyurethane Production

Adipic-acid–based polyester polyols provide:

  • Flexibility
  • Strength
  • Hydrolysis resistance

and are widely used in PU systems.

3. Plastics & Resin Manufacturing

Used in:

  • Alkyd resins
  • Polyester resins
  • Plastic additives

as a structural monomer.

4. Plasticizer Production

Adipic acid is used to produce adipate esters, which are low-migration, high-performance plasticizers for flexible PVC applications.

5. Food Industry – Acidity Regulator (E355)

Provides mild tartness and helps control pH in food and beverage products.

6. Coatings & Paints

Polyesters produced with adipic acid offer:

  • Better flexibility
  • Improved durability
  • Enhanced UV and chemical resistance

🎯 Purposes of Adipic Acid

  • Production of high-strength engineering plastics
  • Manufacturing durable and flexible polyurethane materials
  • Improving performance of plastics, films, and coating resins
  • Providing controlled acidity in food applications
  • Enhancing quality and stability in polyester & alkyd resins

🏭 Industries That Use Adipic Acid

  • Plastic & polymer manufacturing
  • Textile industry (nylon fibers and fabrics)
  • Automotive
  • Electrical & electronics
  • Coatings & paints
  • Insulation and foam production (PU systems)
  • Food industry
